Over the last 18 months, Derby Peoples’ History has tried to find out more about what happened when Alice Wheeldon and her family were arrested almost a hundred years ago. For almost a century they have been vilified as the Peartree Poisoners. Accused of attempting to murder Lloyd George, the Prime Minister, they were imprisoned and Alice herdelf died soon after she was released.
Research has shown that the arrest was ‘a sting’; they were set up by the newly emerging MI5 as a part of the politics of World War One. Derby Civic Society and City Council have placed a Blue Plaque at 12 Peartree Road to celebrate Alice Wheeldon’s contribution.
